Jerry Lee Phillips is not a 'political insider'. And we believe that is a good thing, as it is time for a change in county politics. But our opponent may say, "But wait - Jerry Lee Phillips has held public office before!" So, with a wink at the past, we will highlight his prior service as a Tarrant County official below:

Jerry Lee was 19 years old when sworn-in as Public Weigher on January 2, 1975. Judge John Hill administered the oath in the Tarrant County Courthouse.

The office was mandated in the Texas Constitution at the time. However, the duties of the office had been passed to private weighers. When it was revealed in early summer 1974 that no one held the office, both political parties fielded write-in candidates. The primaries had ended and neither party could place names on the ballot. Jerry Lee won the Democratic Party's endorsement by a flip of the coin at a fundraiser for then-Congressman Jim Wright. He then won the election for Public Weigher of Tarrant County with 417 write-in votes.

In one of the pictures, the size of the TV camera illustrates an era when electronics were scarcely as miniaturized as today. And perhaps the fashions of the time left something to be desired as well. Correspondent Doug Fox (not pictured) found the swearing-in excellent material for a Channel 8 segment that took a sardonic, good-humored poke at Texas government and the state's antiquated constitution. As usual, Fox was right on the mark.
